Your First Thai Massage: What to Expect
Thai massage is unlike most spa treatments. There is usually no oil, you stay clothed, and your therapist moves you through a series of stretches. Here is what to expect on your first visit.
What to wear
Thai massage is traditionally performed over loose, comfortable clothing so you can move freely. Ask when you book whether clothing is provided.
How it feels
Your therapist uses palms, thumbs, elbows and sometimes knees to apply rhythmic pressure along the body. Between these sequences they guide you into stretches for the hips, legs, back and shoulders. It should feel strong but never painful.
Communicate throughout
Everyone’s flexibility is different. If a stretch feels too deep, say so and your therapist will ease off. If you want more, ask.
Before your session
- Avoid a heavy meal in the hour before.
- Arrive a few minutes early to settle in.
- Mention injuries, pregnancy or joint problems.
After your session
Most people feel looser and more energised. Drink water and enjoy the extra freedom of movement. If you prefer a gentler, oil-based treatment next time, try a full body massage.
